Out of nowhere, the Internet was created and changed the lives of many people. Some may say it was the better, some may say it was for the worse. As it affected almost every one of all ages, it has made a much bigger impact on childhood, changing the way children live in our current generation. It is very hard to imagine a life without Internet considering how much it has been ingrained into our lives. Without electronics, most people in this generation would not know what to do. “Our electronic gadgets have become extensions of our bodies, like crutches. On the other hand, you might also say that these powerful tools give us wings.”(Aldiyar 1) It depends on the way you look at things. Some may need to rely on electronics to do things for them; some may use electronics to help guide their way to advance into the future. Are they crutches, or are they wings? The Internet allows for access to social media that people can log on to everyday. Social media is mainly used by teenagers, which leads to the main question: How are the lives of high school teens being affected by the powerful influence of social media compared to a time when it did not exist? The book It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens by Danah Boyd has chapters that explain how teens are affected by social media in different ways.
